Paediatric First Aid - for all those working or caring for children

Length: 2 days

This course is for those working with children and babies. Current HSE guidelines recommend that staff only have to be trained to meet the needs of fellow employees, by law, but the guidelines in the Health and Safety First Aid regulations of 1981, state that in educational establishments, entertainment localities etc “employers may wish to include them (the children and the public) in their assessment of needs and make provision for them”.
It is not essential for all staff working with children over 5 to do a specialist paediatric first aid course, but many establishments prefer their staff to have completed this course, in order to ensure that they are well-equipped to give First aid to the children in their care, as well as to their colleagues. Some schools may prefer to use the Emergency First Aid course, (with an emphasis towards children's care in certain topics), especially if it's a senior school.
This course meets the OFSTED requirements for all those working in Early Years Settings, such as Day-care, Pre-schools and Nurseries, and is essential for those working with under-5’s. The following main topics are covered, meeting all the criteria of the Surestart First Aid guidance for childcare and early year’s settings:

  • Principles of First Aid
  • Assessment (Primary and secondary), of the scene and the patient/s
  • Child and Baby resuscitation
