The Course

This course combines the skillset and competencies for the Emergency First Aid at Work and Emergency Paediatric First Aid Courses. This course is for people working with and caring for babies and young children and adults (either colleagues or other adults). This 12hr course focuses on emergency scenarios that may face those looking after babies and young children and adults
The course can be modified to meet the First Aid Needs Assessment within specific working environments but will cover the adult core topics: – Initial assessment. Breathing Disorders. CPR. Circulatory system/Cardiac problems. Wounds and Bleeding & Shock. Fits. Fractures. Extremity injuries. Head Injuries. The Unconscious patient. Spinal Trauma. Choking. Burns, Scalds & Acid attack. Poisons. Eye Injuries. Maintaining records. Maintaining and stocking First Aid Kits. In addition The Emergency Paediatric First Aider will understand the role and responsibilities of the emergency paediatric first aider, have the ability to assess an emergency situation and prioritise your actions They will learn how to help a baby or child who is unresponsive and breathing normally, unresponsive and not breathing normally, having a seizure, choking, suffering from shock, bleeding, asthma attack, allergic reaction, electric shock, burns or scalds, minor injuries, including cuts, grazes, bumps and bruises, small splinters and nose bleeds.

The course structure includes plenty of practical and practice to build confidence and competence. There are question and answer session, and space to revise areas that candidates may be unsure of. The specification for this course was revised by the HSE in 2009. Employers are currently advised to hold refresher sessions yearly to prevent skill degradation.

Course Certification

To complete the course there is summative and formative assessment. If successful, each candidate will be awarded a the nationally recognised Emergency and Paediatric First Aid at Work certificate which is valid for 3 years. The FAIB recommends that candidate complete yearly refresher training.
